HELP SAVE VULTURE NESTING GROUNDS

ISSUE:
Walmart construction on Signal Mountain Road may disrupt a centuries old
Vulture (both Black and Turkey) roost and nesting grounds.

The Raptor Rescue Response Team, part of the East Tennessee Wildlife
Rehabilitation Council, reports concern regarding the proposed new
Wal-Mart coming to Signal Mountain Road where a large centuries-old
Vulture roost is located. The Response Team is certain that when Wal-Mart
starts the project, they will doze over all nests, incubating eggs and
young birds on the ground. The raptors (both Black and Turkey Vultures),
which are ground nesters, are already disturbed by the road construction
around the Baylor school entrance. The Response Team reports seeing them
in the air at odd times when they should be at roost. If construction
moves forward, a whole generation of vultures may be destroyed.

SUGGESTED ACTION:
The Raptor Rescue Response Team is organizing a list of volunteers that
they can call on short notice to mobilize the rescue effort. Because it is
unlikely that Wal-Mart officials will publicize their intentions, the
rescuers will have to work very fast to save the birds when the time
comes. The Rescue Team already has a network of Federally Permitted
Wildlife Rehabilitators who have agreed to help volunteers in this
endeavor.

DATE(S):
Volunteers will be contacted, and rescue efforts will take place as soon
as it becomes evident that the vultures are going to be harmed.
