creation care

Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light." (Matthew 11:28-30 NLT)

Saving Fuel During Summer Travel

Auto Maintenance

•  Give your vehicle engine a regular tune-up.

•  Change your oil on the schedule and using the octane recommended by the manufacturer.

•  Use your manufacturer's recommended octane of gasoline.

•  Consider using ethanol if it is available in your area.

•  Regularly check the vehicle's tire pressure and wheel alignment.

•  Track gas mileage, looking for changes that would indicate a problem.

•  Change the fuel filter once a year.

•  Make sure the air filter is clean.

•  Repair leaking fluids.

Driving

•  Follow speed limits.

•  Use cruise control on the highway.

•  When appropriate, use overdrive gearing to save gas and reduce engine wear.

•  Avoid unnecessary breaking by not following too closely and anticipating situations.

•  Accelerate gently.

•  Avoid unnecessary idling and drive-through services.

•  Remove unnecessary items from the trunk that are adding weight.

•  If possible, store items in the vehicle rather than on the roof, and remove roof racks when they are not in use.

•  Park in the shade to reduce the need for air conditioning.

•  Avoid peak time travel.

•  Plan efficient travel by using maps, organizing errands, and taking needed items for multiple outings.

•  If you rent a vehicle, check on renting the smallest one available.

book review

Berry, R. J., ed. The Care of Creation: Focusing Concern and Action. Leicester, England:
Inter-Varsity, 2000. 213p.

The Care of Creation is a compilation of stimulating theological commentary by several leading theologians and environmental practitioners regarding the 1994 Evangelical Environmental Network document An Evangelical Declaration on the Care of Creation. The various viewpoints of these writers help the reader understand Christians' relationship with nature and our call to protect it, as well as inspire us to put into practice what we have learned.

Contributors to The Care of Creation include:
Richard Bauckham, R. J. Berry, Calvin B. DeWitt, Susan Drake, Timothy Dudley-Smith, Ron Elsdon, John Guillebaud, Peter Harris, John T. Houghton, Alister E. McGrath, I. Howard Marshall, Jόrgen Moltmann, Michael S. Northcott, Oliver M. T. O'Donovan, Ghillean T. Prance, Stephen Rand, Ronald J. Sider, Howard J. Van Till, Lynn White, Jr. (1966 lecture that sparked debate in the Christian community), Loren Wilkinson, and Richard T. Wright.

The five affirmations of An Evangelical Declaration on the Care of Creation addressed in the book are as follows:

As followers of Jesus Christ, committed to the full authority of the Scriptures, and aware of the ways we have degraded creation, we believe that biblical faith is essential to  the solution of our ecological problems.

We and our  children face a growing crisis in the health of the creation in which we are embedded, and through which, by God's grace, we are sustained. Yet we continue to degrade that creation.

Many concerned people, convinced that environmental problems are more spiritual than technological, are exploring the world's ideologies and religions  in search of non-Christian spiritual resources for the healing of the earth. As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe that the Bible calls us to respond in four  ways:

First, God calls us to confess and repent of attitudes which devalue creation, and which twist or ignore biblical revelation to support our misuse of  it.

Second, our actions and attitudes toward the earth need to proceed  from the center of our faith, and be rooted in the fullness of God's revelation in Christ and the Scriptures.

Third, we seek carefully to learn all that the Bible tells us about  the Creator, creation, and the human task.

Fourth, we seek to understand what creation reveals about God's divinity, sustaining presence, and everlasting power, and what creation teaches  us of its God-given order and the principles by which it works.

Thus we call on all those who are committed to the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to affirm the following principles of biblical faith, and to seek ways of living out these principles in our personal lives, our churches, and  society.

We believe that in Christ there is hope, not only for men, women and children, but also for the rest of creation which is suffering from the  consequences of human sin.

The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.
(Numbers 6:24-26, NKJV)
