FOR REFLECTION

Praising God our Creator

Psalm 104:30-34

When you send your Spirit,
    they are created,
    and you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
    may the LORD rejoice in his works-

he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,
    who touches the mountains, and they smoke.

I will sing to the LORD all my life;
    I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

May my meditation be pleasing to him,
    as I rejoice in the LORD.

(NIV)

Revelation 4:11

"You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
   and by your will they were created
   and have their being."

(NIV)

CREATION CARE

"Forget the former things;
    do not dwell on the past.

See, I am doing a new thing!
    Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
    I am making a way in the desert
    and streams in the wasteland.

The wild animals honor me,
    the jackals and the owls,
    because I provide water in the desert
    and streams in the wasteland,
    to give drink to my people, my chosen,

    the people I formed for myself
    that they may proclaim my praise."

(Isaiah 43:18-21, NIV)

AT CHURCH

Church members are purposeful about litter clean-up

On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, members of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Dalton, Georgia, gathered after worship for the congregation’s annual Thanksgiving fellowship dinner. After dinner, instead of lingering over coffee and pie, between fifteen and twenty members of the church slipped into orange vests and latex gloves and went outside to pick up litter on Thornton Avenue, the busy street that runs in front of the church. Before long they had collected several large bags of trash, which they left on the curb in front of the church for Dalton Public Works crews to collect on Monday.

Members of Christ the King have been cleaning up Thornton Avenue ever since the congregation signed up for the local “Adopt-A-Highway” program early in 2005. The adult Sunday School class was studying Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life, and began discussing ways that the church could expand its mission to the local community. Class members decided to adopt a mile of the street in front of the church as the congregation’s gift to the local community, and as a way of showing care for God’s creation. Once the project was announced to the rest of the congregation, the whole church enthusiastically embraced the idea. One member of the class, Cindy Latour, contacted the city of Dalton to find out how to sign up for the Adopt-A-Highway program.

The congregation has conducted its quarterly clean-ups on Sundays after church, and each clean-up event has drawn around twenty participants. Since average worship attendance at Christ the King is between 50 and 60 each Sunday, the clean-up crews represent a large portion of the church membership. Church members of all ages have participated, including some entire families.

Cindy Latour says, “The first time we cleaned up, I couldn’t believe how many people went! Everybody really seems to enjoy it. It gives us a sense that we’re doing something to serve our community, and it also creates immediate gratification; we can drive away from church and see how neat the roadside looks and say, ‘We just cleaned this.’” Other benefits of the project include the fellowship the participants share as they walk the roadside together, and the publicity the church garners from the street signs that announce “Adopt-A-Highway Litter Control by Christ the King Lutheran Church.”

Information about Adopt-A-Highway programs:

If your congregation or organization would like to adopt a highway, contact your local public works department, local beautification committee, or state department of transportation. Adopt-A-Highway organizations typically provide training and all necessary materials, including vests, safety gloves, and trash bags.
Most states also offer information on an Adopt-A-Highway web page: Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee.
